After viewing the video, "A Girl Like Me", add your reaction to the societal pressures of being a young person in today's world. Have a good, safe weekend.
I think that what the girls were saying was definitely true. Being a black girl myself, I know how it feels to not know who you really are. Straight hair is something that is the perpetuated stereotype of what hair we should have. I know that my hair wasn't straight a couple of years ago because I had a nap-fro when I was a baby. But for some reason in that picture, I looked happy. I think that straight is more manageable but I'm not sure if it's really right. I've had perms, had a hot comb through my hair, and had weave. I don't know why we obsess over hair texture so much but maybe it's deep rooted from slavery. The comments about skin color don't affect me because I'm not super light nor super dark so I don't have a problem with my skin color. You should accept that you have that color for basically the rest of your life. The thing with the dolls was not really shocking. Society kind of shows that black is bad and mean and that white is nice and all right. It's not true because I'm a nice black person and I know mean white people. It shouldn't matter what color a doll is. A doll is a doll is a doll.
After viewing the short film "A Girl Like Me" I can say I do understand what the girls were talking about. Although I do not necessarily feel like I have problems with myself about how I look; I do know people who do. Society has put in people's heads for years that people of lighter complection or of white race are better. The hair type that you have makes you beautiful. However none of this is true. Beauty is not what is on the outside but what you can produce from the inside. Its so cliche but it is absoulutley true when someone says beauty is only skin deep. People must break out of the stereotypes and stop being afraid to think of themselves as beautiful. You can only blame the media for so long. After a while it is up to you to determine who you are and how much you are worth. The test that was run on which the children chose dolls should show parents that they have not instilled the right things in their children. Most of them feel lost but they should be taught that they need to love the person within. They should be taught their heritage and learn that everyone is unique for a reason.
Well first I’ll say that I understand their views on black females in the society today. It’s not just girls though; most times I hear the opposite remarks with dark skin African American men. A lot of girls I know find them more attractive because they say that light skin boys aren’t I guess tough enough they’re just pretty boys and things like that. There’s just so much stereo typing and problems within our own race where we discriminate against ourselves as a community of African Americans or just as teenager’s period. I believe that these stereotypes come from years of people judging and just ignorance. Like not only with black and light skin but with fat and skinny. There are some guys that like thick girls and others that like thin. Some girls like the hardcore guys and some like the more romantic and passionate type of guys. No matter what everyone’s being judged anyways and I believe that as long as people are constantly changing these types of issues will always be around there might be something new a few years from now. You never really know.
Society has a terrible influence on adolescence in America. For those young people to call their own kind the bad kind is just down right ridiculous. Society is poisoning their minds and at that young of an age is just a shame. But now a day everything is being inherited at a young age, children are truly becoming products of their environments. What you grow up around and the lifestyle you live really defines your future and the type of adult you will become. So the younger you are the more gullible you are for society to have an influence on you. Because I know when I have a conversation or do something around little kids they tend to try to reiterate what I just did or create their own little version. So the immature minds of kids are easily overtaken by anyone who shows interest in them.
My reaction to societal pressure of being a youg person today i would have to say is alot. People judge you before you even hit the door by the color of your skin if your black they think your loud and have no morals if yor white they think your conservative and know everyting. Its like you dont know what to do and what not to do because people are always going to judge you. If you do great in life they judge you because they think that just becuase your black and successful you think your better than everyone. So to me eather way its a lose lose situation. Its also a big thing if you dont know who you are as a person or your culture its like you just try to pick something just cause everyone else is that culture so you can feel whole and fit in but thats not always the case. You also have to put in effort to know you cant just sit there and expect for someome to say here this is who you are and these are your ancestors from way back. You need to look read because everything in life is not handed to you.
I think there are major societal pressures of being a young person in today's world. There are so many expectations that were supposed to live up to, and at times it can be real hard. For example, in the movie the young girl talked about how her mom said she liked her natural hairstyle at first and then said it was time to change it because she was starting to look like an African. Her own mother expects her to look a certain way, even if it's not what she wants. Another societal pressure is that as a young person and black at at, your autmatically looked at a certain way. I think it's crazy that even the young babies in the video looked at the black doll as being the "mean" one, and the white doll as the "nice" one. This just shows how soceity is really affecting them.
This video is just like what the millions of teenagers go threw on a the daily. A lot of teenagers can not be there self because they are to busy trying to be like some one else. Many teens fall easy into the trap of peer pressure because the way they are judge by others teens. In addition many teens have low self esteem because others might say something mean that make them feel bad about there self. How ever many teens might not think what others have to say about them which make it possible for them to feel good about them. Also some teens might bust on other people because they feel bad about them self, to make them feel good about them self. Simply put if we all would look in the mirror we would not say anything to anyone.
I love being. And whoever doest like it oh well that’s how it is. Society shouldn’t have that pressure on people and people shouldn’t feed into it. You should be happy for who you are. When I was watching that all I could do was be kind of shocked a black women going out and buying bleach cream for her and her children be serious. For what I think it as to do with low self esteem. Its some things that are people change about them selves but I don’t think your skin color should be one of them. Just because your lighter doesn’t make you any prettier or better than the next dark person.
The doll thing was kind of shocking because when I was little I only played with black Barbies. When giving a choice I always chose the black Barbies.
I think it was funny how the young black kids mostly picked the white doll and said it was better. You would think they wouldve picked the black doll because they were black too. I think that was wierd and funny. Another thing that interested me was how one girl in the video said African Americans dont know where they came from so they dont know what culture to claim or how they should be. I know what country my ancestors are from but i can empathize what it would feel like to not know. It probably would be hard and since African Americans dont know where they are specifically from in Africa they have to face not passing on the culture of their ancestors. This is a big part in knowing who you are
