Slavery Differences
Slaves brought to the New World either went to the Caribbean or what is currently the East Coast of the United States and Canada. These colonies were either in hands of the British, Dutch, French or Spanish. Except for the Dutch, how did the colonial settlement create differences in the way Africans were treated in the New World.

The slaves that were brought to the East Coast of the United States and Canada were treated exceptionally different in the New World. They were once treated as servants who were recongized as human beings. Once reaching the New World the colonist realized the potential that slaves had. The need for labor was the primary thoughts of the colonist. In states such as Virginia and Maryland the slaves were treated fairly humane and were allowed certain priveleages. Slavery in the middle east was fairly unsuccessful. In places such as Pennsylvania where Quakers(peaceful people)occupied slavery was looked down upon. Other areas such as New England, The Carolinas and Georgia encouraged slavery. Laws were harsh and kept slaves from doing numerous things. Slavery brought in profits that benefited the growing colonies.
ReplyDeleteEven though Spanish officials assessed slaves on inventories and priced them for sale, they still viewed slaves as moral and legal entities rather than mere commodities. The Partidas protected slaves from abusive masters or freeman, and even provided for the removal of slaves from vicious masters. It also allowed slaves to testify in court against their masters. Enforcement of slavery and slave codes largely rested with each slave’s owner. As far as the British there were no laws comparable to those of the Spanish Crown or Catholic Church that encouraged lenient treatment of slaves or discouraged brutal or supercilious treatment of slaves. Much like their approach to their colonial economies, the British-American approach to slavery was far more uncontrolled than that of Spain.
ReplyDeleteThe differences that they had were many in New England they used rum to buy thier slaves. They were the three largest slave populations. After the age of 50 they didnt really have to care for there slaves. The Middle Colonies the slaves were not a competent witness in cases involving freemen. It was also not very successful in the Middle Colonies. Carolinas and Georgia they were warned against undue cruelty to slaves. They also suggested that that slaves should be givin time to study.
ReplyDeleteBesides the Dutch, colonial settlement created many different differences in the way Africans were treated in the New World. For example, at a point in time, they were actually treated like human beings with respect and dignity. Then the colonist realized that labor was a major need and when they reached the New World, the potential the slaves became recognizable. The slaves in Virgina and Maryland were allowed certain treatments and sometimes even privealges. But when it came to the British, there weren’t a lot of laws that discouraged the brutal treatment of slaves. I think the British approach to slavery was much more uncontrolled then Spains approach.
ReplyDeleteThe colonial settlement created differences in the way Africans were treated in the New World first because they were treated as slaves rather then servants. Colonies such as Virginia and Maryland treated their slaves like human being even though that didn’t justify them as still being slaves. They had some privileges. Other colonies such as Carolina and New England treated the Africans or the slaves like there weren’t human. As Africans began to grow rapidly, the white population began to worry that they would outnumber them. Africans began to rebel against their masters, and that when the masters began to create a slave code. The colonies that enforced slavery made rules in order to keep their slaves in check; such as if you wasn’t with your master you had to have a written document that said you were allowed. Or being out to late without a lantern, or even not being able to associate with other Africans. But other colonies such as Pennsylvania were Quakers lived didn’t really believe in slavery but let their slaves read, write, and practice religion. It wasn’t until slaves were brought into the New World till they would be treated like slaves rather then servant.

When the slaves first arrived in The New World they were treated good in Virginia slaves were servants and helping to form development of the tabacco plantations and slavery in Maryland didn't have any brutal slavery either and their slave population increased slowly because of their lack of supply. In Georgia there originally weren't any slaves but when the slave population grew in Georgia and the Carolina's the people feared that the slaves would revolt against them. Slaverly became horrid then. The Dutch and New England were interested in the slave trade and making profits fro transporting slaves here slaves constructed houses an forts.
ReplyDeleteThe Colonial settlement life easier for the slaves. They gave most slaves jobs and other actives for them. The Quakers treated the slaves with respect. They did not beat them if they spoke out of turn. The Colonial Settlement create opportunities for the native Indians that were already there.
ReplyDeleteIn the beginning, slavery in the New World almost matched slavery in Europe. Slaves in Europe were treated more like servants. Many of them were indentured servants and when their indenture was over, they were free. In the New World, this was the experience for some people. Slavery wasn’t based on race, just on class status. After a while, Africans were treated like chattel and had no rights. The Spanish were very religious so they viewed slaves as humans. Slaves didn't have much rules back in the Eurpoean countries. After slavery got more strict, the slave code was then adopted. The Virginia slave code didn't allow slaves out after night. This was because they feared of uprisings and blacks outnumbering the white population. This led to slaves disrespecting their masters.
